Short Bio of Dr. Akihiro Kashihara

Akihiro Kashihara received his B.S., and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and System Engineering from Tokushima University in 1987 and 1989 respectively, and his Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from Osaka University in 1992. He was an assistant/associate professor of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research in Osaka University from 1992 to 2004. From 2005 to 2009 he was an associate professor of Information and Communication Engineering in The University of Electro-Communications, and he is now a professor of Graduate School of Informatics and Engineering in UEC.

His work has been dedicated to designing and developing intelligent learning environments. His main research interests lie in modeling of learning, robot in learning/education, meta-cognition in hyperspace, knowledge externalization, cognitive loading, scaffolding with cognitive tools, cognitive apprenticeship for skill development, Web-based learning environments, and e-Laboratory including presentation skill development and meeting review support.

He received Outstanding Paper Award of EDMEDIA1995, Best Paper Award of Annual Conference of Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) in 1993, and SIG Research Award from JSAI in 1996, 1998, 2005, 2010, and 2013, and Best Paper Award of Annual Conference of Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSiSE) in 2008, and 2017, and SIG Research Awards from JSiSE in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019.

He has served as workshop co-chair in ICCE2007 & ICALT2009, Local Steering Committee Vice Chair in ICALT2007, Local Organizing Committee Chair in ICCE2014, senior program committee in AIED2007/2009/2011/2015, PC member in several international conferences, and WIP co-chair in ICCE2010.

He has been also quite active in both local and international academic societies, which include editorial board member of the following journals: International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education (from 2013), International Journal of Interactive Learning Environments (from 2005), Journal of International Forum of Educational Technology & Society, Transactions of Japanese Society of Information and Systems in Education, Transactions of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers, Transactions of Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, and Japan Journal of Educational Technology, and also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Information and Systems in Education.
